I modified a couple of the sections to model what I want my future classroom to be like. Some of the sections like resource locations and administrative contacts I could not fill out because those will vary by school and classroom. Also, the emergency drills might differ from school to school so this would be something I need to fill out after I was hired and settled into a teaching position. The weekly class schedule is a feature that would have to be updated weekly or if you, the teacher, know in advance when you are going to be absent can be completed for the specific days.
This would be applied when the teacher is absent. You can keep a general template of this saved on the computer and just alter it if you change schools or rooms. I would have a designated substitute teacher folder with a completed copy of the substitute teacher instructions document and a hand written note stating the specifics of what needs to get completed in regards to classwork. I would also designate a student I felt was responsible and trustworthy to help the sub out.

It is so important to be able to feel like you didn’t leave your students stranded in an island with a stranger, at least this template will give you peace of mind that the person taking your place for a day, will follow your instructions, and for those “special friends” in your classroom there would be specific instructions on what to do, or even how to react, so there won’t be any surprises. Modifying the sections to adjust it to your classroom was a great idea, since every classroom is different. This template will help you in an emergency, if you have to leave in a hurry, which can happen any time. I like your idea to have a student to help the sub, they are usually kind of lost sometimes, but most of the time, it’s just confusion, so a student would be the best help for a sub in an emergency situation.
ReplyDeleteHello Ashlyn, I think it is very important to have a guide in place for when a substitute teacher comes in. Every class day must be taken advantage of because when you think about it teachers really do not have a lot of teaching time with their students. From classroom disruptions to drills and assembles to holidays, all of these take time out. In a situation where you are not able to make it to work, it is comforting to know the day wont be wasted. It lessens the possibility of the students taking over the class and avoids misunderstandings such as a student telling the sub that they do one thing when it normally wouldn't fly if you were present. I think your template is a great tool every teacher should have!
ReplyDeleteAshlyn, this is a great communication piece!! Often have to cover in classrooms and there are even though I work at the school there are still classroom policies and other things that I am not aware of such as schedules. Having a tool like this would make the transition of the day so much more organized. The day is always more difficult when the teacher is out but this would definitely help the day go smoother.
ReplyDeleteAshlyn, this is a great idea! This template includes so much information that it would be hard for a sub to ever get lost in the classroom again! It is very tough when teachers are not organized enough to have preparations for a sub teacher. This is such an efficient way to make sure that the classroom stays productive and on track while you are away! Great JOB!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI've had a fair share of substitute teachers as well and I have seen it where they don't know what to do or the teacher doesn't leave instructions for them. Being a substitute teacher is not easy. You have to step in and take over for someone whose teaching that class on a daily basis when this would probably be your first time. This is a great template because it is always good to write instructions and notes so that the substitute will know what to do and how to handle the class. I like how it's broken down into sections and each section is labeled.
ReplyDeleteAshlyn,
ReplyDeleteWhat a great tool to use! A lot of times a teacher is not setting up their substitute for success, and leaves nothing or very little instructions. This template would really help the substitute to understand what the teacher is looking for. The students will also benefit from this because they will be able to stay on task with the learning plans. The teachers will ultimately benefit as well, especially if they miss several days. The substitute will be held to a standard instead of just filling in and being a body. Great tool!
Ashlyn, I fell like the is something I would use in my class for sure. I like the way everything is neatly presented and put in specific categories. Some times teachers forget how important it is to have something like this done the correct. It not only makes your students have more productive days, but also helps the substitute know how to handle most situations.
